    My Story

    I’m Joel Steinberg, a 74-year-old who has lived with Type 2 Diabetes for over 35 years—and I am remarkably healthy. My journey has had its challenges, especially in the early days when managing diabetes was far less understood than it is now.

    My father also had Type 2 Diabetes, but he struggled to control his blood sugar and eventually faced severe complications, including dialysis and hospice care. Witnessing his journey deeply impacted me. In my 20s, I suspected I might develop diabetes too. While visiting him, I noticed my blood sugar took much longer than two hours to return to normal after eating. Doctors assured me I didn’t have diabetes, as the concept of pre-diabetes didn’t exist back then, but I began educating myself anyway.

    I was ahead of my time—I knew about A1C before most doctors did. Despite my knowledge, I initially didn’t feel symptoms or see the need to change my lifestyle. When I was eventually diagnosed, I avoided making changes that might disrupt my family. Over time, I faced complications like heart problems, kidney issues, and neuropathy. The older medications often caused dangerously low blood sugar, adding to the challenge.

    Thankfully, things have improved.
